Today.... The USDA approved a kit for identifying GM wheat, found in Oregon, that may or may not have gone to other countries.  USDA continues to say that it was an isolated incident.  Asian countries say (ya sure?!)  They will continue to do their own testing and continue to ban US white wheat in places.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday....Indonesia has joined the GMO club.  Japan, Korea and Taiwan have all stated that they want a USDA GMO free guarantee before purchasing anything from the U.S.  These countries have placed quarantine to protect their consumers.  Regulatory approval is nessasary for all imports.  Meanwhile, USDA has stated that they have not come across ANY information regarding GMO grain entering the supply chain.  As information (or lack of) continues to circulate, rumors say Wester Europe and Asian importers all fear some contamination as inveestigators say they have been looking in other states that had these variety trials from 1998-2005.

Wash. wheat growers sue Monsanto for GMO release
By
MATEUSZ PERKOWSKI
Capital Press

Several wheat farms in Washington are seeking a class action lawsuit against the Monsanto Co., accusing the biotech developer of negligence for the unauthorized release of transgenic wheat.  Dreger Enterprises of Creston, Wash., and Wahl Ranch of Lind, Wash., have filed a legal complaint seeking compensation for diminished wheat prices, loss of export markets and "contamination of the entire wheat farming and production chain."  The complaint alleges that Monsanto failed to "prevent commingling of genetically-engineered wheat with non-genetically engineered wheat during test planting, harvest, handling, storage, transport and disposal."

In a separate complaint, Tom Stahl and Clarmar Farms of Waterville, Wash., also seek a class action lawsuit on behalf of other growers and make substantially identical allegations.

The Center for Food Safety, a non-profit that litigated over biotech crops in the past, is also a plaintiff in the latter complaint.
Capital Press was unable to immediately reach Monsanto for comment.
The new lawsuits come after a Kansas farmer, Ernest Barnes, filed a complaint against the company after an unauthorized release of biotech wheat was discovered in Oregon.

The USDA announced May 29 that genetic tests confirmed the wheat contained a glyphosate-resistant "Roundup Ready" trait developed by Monsanto that was never approved for commercial use by the agency.

In a statement responding to the Kansas complaint, Monsanto said the litigation was spurred by "tractor-chasing lawyers" without actual evidence of the company's fault.

USDA first of last week................

The Agriculture Department says a non-approved strain of genetically engineered wheat has been discovered in an Oregon field.

USDA officials said the wheat is the same strain as a genetically modified wheat that was tested by seed giant Monsanto a decade ago but never approved. Monsanto stopped testing that product in Oregon and several other states in 2005.

There is no genetically engineered wheat approved for U.S. farming, and the discovery is a potential threat to trade with other countries that have concerns about genetically modified foods. The United States exports about half of its wheat product.

The USDA said the genetically engineered wheat is safe to eat, but it is investigating how it ended up in the field. Officials would not comment on how it may have gotten there.
